MOTOWN GOLD

One of the most important contributions Ed Sullivan will be remembered for is how he bucked the system and embraced R&B performers, giving them their first television breaks. In particular, in the sixties Sullivan embraced the artists from a small record company from Detroit - Berry Gordy’s Motown. Sullivan introduced nearly all the Motown acts helping to break the race barrier in this turbulent period.

Motown Gold from The Ed Sullivan Show is a 2 DVD (3 volume) collection with appearances by legendary Motown acts including The Jackson 5, Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Temptations, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Martha & The Vandellas and Gladys Knight & The Pips. The collection is packed with classic Motown performances taped live between 1964 and 1971, fully restored with footage never before released. Some of the highlights include:

* The Jackson 5 ushering in a new generation of Motown acts with a medley of their No. 1 hits “I Want You Back,” “The Love You Save” and “ABC.”

* Diana Ross and The Supremes performing their No. 1 hits “Come See About Me,” “Someday We’ll Be Together” and “Love Child.”

* The Temptations doing their No. 1 hits “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” and “I Can’t Get Next to You.” * The Four Tops with their No. 1 hit single “Reach Out I’ll Be There.”

* Marvin Gaye’s only Sullivan appearance singing “Take This Heart of Mine.”

* Young Stevie Wonder captivating the audience with his No. 1 hit “Fingertips Pt. 2” and his classic “For Once in My Life.”

“Maybe Tomorrow” 30

On April 12th, 1971, Maybe Tomorrow, the 5th album by the Jackson 5, was released on Motown MS 735.

Produced by Hal Davis and The Corporation, Motown released it a few weeks after the single Never Can Say Goodbye, which sold over a million copies. The track was written especially for Michael by Clifton Davis.

The album reached #11 Pop albums. It contains a cover version of Honey Chile, originally by the Motowners Martha & the Vandellas, and another of Sixteen Candles from The Crests.

The second single, Maybe Tomorrow, reached #20 Pop, which is not bad, but for the 1st time, a song didn’t top the charts.

The original US pressing of the album includes a gatefold cover. In France, a extremely rare collector edition, with Orange vinyl, was distributed by Europe 1 radio to the listenners. The album was reissued in Canada in 1974 with a different cover.

ABC, Easy As No. 1

Forty-one years ago today, April 25, 1970, the Beatleswere dethroned by a bunch of kids from Indiana.

It was the British mega-band’s tune Let It Be that topped the charts for two weeks before the Jackson 5came along and claimed the pop-music throne with its tune ABC.

The song made its debut that February on American Bandstand (ironically, but maybe intentionally, on the ABC television network) and didn’t take long before it swept the nation and became a regular on radio stations throughout America.

The song was built on the same structure as the Jackson’s earlier hit, I Want You Back, but the similarities didn’t keep the songs from selling. The LP, which kept the ABC name, sold 850,000 units in its first year of release and more than 6-million copies since. Those first-year numbers are incredible seeing that the R&B genre was mostly a singles-driven market at that time.

Diana! Special aired 40 years ago!

On April 18, 1971, Diana! special show was aired on ABC.

The special featured performances by The Jackson 5, and also included Jackson 5 lead singer Michael Jackson’s solo debut. Michael Jackson performed Frank Sinatra’s “It Was a Very Good Year”, which drew laughter as its adult-themed lyrics were changed to fit his age. Other guests included Danny Thomas and Bill Cosby, who would be featured on a similar TV special by the Jackson 5 (Goin’ Back to Indiana) a few months later.

An album was released a few days after the show, on Motown.
